Aenur The Sword of Twilight
One of my recent projects was painting Aenur, Sword of Twilight, a classic and beloved character from the Warhammer universe. Aenur first appeared in the world of Mordheim as a mysterious Elven wanderer - silent, graceful, and impossibly deadly. His legend speaks of a warrior who moves like a shadow, striking with supernatural precision and vanishing before his enemies even know he was there.
From a hobbyist’s perspective, Aenur is an absolute pleasure to work with. The miniature is beautifully sculpted: sharp, clean details, an elegant, dynamic pose, and a presence that perfectly captures the aura of an ancient Elven hero. His large, flowing cloak is especially impressive. Its size and shape make it a perfect space for freehand artwork - something I was excited to take advantage of.
This model was painted for a client, and at their request, the freehand on the cloak was created by my partner. The artwork shows a dragon towering over a lone warrior, looking down at him with cold superiority. It’s not a protective scene - it’s a confrontation. The warrior stands ready to face the beast, while the dragon dominates the composition from above, emphasizing the imbalance of power. It’s a dramatic, tension-filled image that fits beautifully with the miniature’s atmosphere.
The color palette was chosen by the miniature’s owner, and I must say - the red complements Aenur wonderfully. It enhances his silhouette and adds intensity without overwhelming the sculpt.
On the inside of the cloak, I added a High Elven glyph known as "Lacoi", which translates to might, glory, fear of death. It felt like the perfect symbolic addition for a wandering swordmaster carrying centuries of experience.
I’m also very pleased with how the sword turned out. It gave me a great opportunity to practice NMM, and the technique really helps the blade stand out - sharp, reflective, and worthy of an Elven hero.
Overall, this project was a wonderful blend of storytelling, freehand experimentation, and technical practice. Aenur remains one of those models that remind me why I love this hobby so much.
